Texas Tortoise (Gopherus Berlandieri)

Range-Texas Tortoises can be found not only in the state of Texas but in regions of northern Mexico as well.

Habitat-Texas tortoises are found in grasslands and very dry savanna like territories. They have an extreme tolerance to heat and dry conditions. They do seek shelter in thick bushes and small patches of outskirts brush “forest”. They are a hibernating species of Gopher tortoise through the short 3 month winters in south Texas and Northern Mexico.         

Diet-Grasses, Succulents, and broad leave weeds and plants.

Size-Males 11”. Females 13-14”

Conservation- Threatened. They are illegal to possess or collect in the state of Texas.
